Ramblers Volunteering

Volunteering for the Ramblers is a cornerstone of the UK’s walking culture. The Alton Ramblers members get involved with various different roles (in alphabetical order):

• Committee Members: Volunteers who manage the local walks, meetings, finances, websites and publicity. They ensure the group follows national Ramblers policies.
• Footpath Maintenance: A team of volunteers who maintain and improve the public rights of way by clearing overgrown vegetation, installing gates, repairing stiles, building bridges, and maintaining steps.
• Footpath Wardens: Individuals assigned to a specific "parish" or area. They walk the paths once or twice a year to check for blockages, broken signs, or illegal obstructions and report them to Hampshire County Council (HCC).
• Programme Co-ordinators: The "architects" of the walking calendar. They liaise with various leaders to ensure there is a diverse range of walks (from short "wellbeing walks" to strenuous mountain hikes) available for members.
• Walk Leaders: These volunteers plan, "recce" (scout), and lead group walks. They are responsible for navigation and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the group.
